I bought pickled watermelon rind at a farmers market once when I was camping. Interesting to try, but FAR too sweet for me to eat more than one piece of.

Sounds like something I have to try. I also recall seeing a recipe for Watermelon Rinds Soup. Seemed so weird at the time. Just one important note: It is tempting, but don't fish any kind of pickles from a jar using your fingers, it spoils the pickles that remain in the jar. Always use a clean fork...

I am really excited about this. I too live in the Washington, DC area, am from the south, and have been getting many watermelons at the local farmer's markets and have been wanting to pickle the rinds. So timely that I just found this weblog with this recipe. I'm ready to give it a go.

This was a blast from the past for me! My mom used to make Watermelon Pickles - and then send me to school with them!

I didn't like them (back in the 60's the term was "Gross!") and the other kids thought I was strange to bring something like that to school. (Maybe because it was Los Angeles?)

Anyway - I' sure they're delicious and I might even like them if I tried them...it's just the mental block!!! Thanks for the laugh!

Julie

This is something I'd heard of but had never wanted to try until now!

Hi there, I'm delighted to have tripped over this blog entry after having had Pickled Watermelon Rind at a very nice restaurant last night near LA, where the chef used to work at the French Laundry blah blah blah. Anyway, the pickled rinds were fantastic with the homemade pate!

Just got a late watermelon today where it is like summer during the day, but cool at night at least, and we'll be making this soon -- just have to get jars and stuff! Thanks for the great story and details about this delicacy ; )
